What is Samsung Galaxy?

Samsung Galaxy is already making a huge noise in the electronics, particularly in the smartphones and tablets category, these days. The Samsung Galaxy is a series of mobile computing devices that are created by South Korean company Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. The main operating system of the Samsung Galaxy devices is Android, which is based on Linux operating system and is designed for touchscreen mobile gadgets. Google Inc., who owns the search engine Google (obviously) and one of the fastest growing online business companies of today, is managing thousands of Android apps at its Google Play store (much like the iTunes store for iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad). For those who don't know, Google purchased Android Inc. later in 2005, which means that the android OS is definitily having a brighter future that will compete with the growing needs of touchscreen devices.

Currently, there are five main types of the Samsung Galaxy gadgets. These are the smartphones, phablets, tablets, multimedia player and the camera.

How to Know a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone?

You will know if a particular Samsung smartphone is part of the aforementioned series if the term "Galaxy" or the short code GT (some don't have this code) is coined to it. For example, Samsung Galaxy Ace, which is also named as the Samsung GT S5830.

Most of the smartphones of the Samsung Galaxy series have similar appearance and interface, that is to say, they have the three main buttons aligned at the front portion of the device. These buttons include the Home, Back, and Menu. At the sides of the Samsung Galaxy devices, you usually see the power and the volume control buttons.

Below, is a timeline on the release of various Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The first smartphone for this series was the Samsung Galaxy (i7500), which was released in June 2009. The latest one is the Samsung Galaxy Pro (SGH-I547), which was released last October 2012.

Samsung Galaxy Phablets

Phablet is any touchscreen mobile devices which screen is equal or greater than 5 inches but not more than 7 inches. It is basically a combination of the term phone and tablet = phablet. The term was coined by LG Electronics.

There are also phablets for the Samsung Galaxy series. These devices include the Samsung Galaxy Note I and Samsung Galaxy Note II.

The Samsung Galaxy Note I and II have the same capability of the smartphones and the tablet. There's a stylus included for user input purposes. You can also take photos from it and send messages like smartphones. You may also watch and take videos and listen to music. However, it might not be advantageous for some since it can be a bit bulky because of its size.

Samsung Galaxy Tablets

Samsung currently has eight units for its Samsung Galaxy Tablet series. These include the:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is not part of the phablet series.

Samsung Galaxy Multimedia Player

The Samsung Galaxy multimedia player is pretty much like Apple's iPod Touch. It looks similar with the Samsung Galaxy series smartphones but it doesn't have the capability to send text or calls. It is built solely for playing multimedia files like music and videos. Currently, the Samsung Galaxy player supports the following codecs:

For audio files:
  • MP3
  • M4A (AAC, AAC+, eAAC+)
  • AMR (AMR-NB, AMR-WB)
  • WMA
  • Ogg
  • FLAC

For video files:
  • MP4
  • 3GP
  • AVI (DivX, Xvid)
  • WMV
  • ASF H.263/H.264
Samsung Galaxy Camera

The Samsung Galaxy camera was announced by the company last August 29, 2012. Unlike any digital cameras, the Samsung Galaxy camera has 4G connectivity. The camera is also capable to taking pictures at 16MP. It is built with 4.6-86.1 mm (21x) lens with superzoom capability.
